Key Information

Welcome to Nepal! Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, a representative from Alture Treks will greet you with a warm smile and traditional Nepali welcome. You’ll be transferred to your hotel in the heart of Kathmandu, where you can unwind after your journey. Depending on your arrival time, you can take a gentle stroll through the bustling Thamel area, a popular tourist district filled with trekking shops, cozy cafés, and cultural curiosities. In the evening, you’ll meet your trek leader for a briefing and gear check.

After an early breakfast, set off on a scenic drive through Nepal’s middle hills. The journey takes you along the Prithvi Highway before branching toward Arughat and then following a bumpy but picturesque road to Machha Khola, nestled beside the roaring Budhi Gandaki River. Along the way, observe terraced farms, waterfalls, and villages clinging to the hillsides. Arrive in the evening and check into a simple teahouse for dinner and rest before trekking begins.

The trail begins with a series of undulating paths along the Budhi Gandaki River. You’ll pass small settlements like Khorlabesi and Tatopani (where there's a natural hot spring) and cross suspension bridges over dramatic gorges. After lunch near Dobhan, continue along rocky cliffs and dense forests until reaching Jagat, a stone-paved village with traditional houses and a checkpoint for entering the Manaslu Conservation Area. Stay in a charming local teahouse.

Today marks your entry into the Tsum Valley, a sacred Himalayan region with strong Tibetan Buddhist influences. Climb up from Jagat to Salleri for stunning views of Sringi Himal, then descend to Sirdibas. After crossing a long suspension bridge, reach Philim—a Gurung village with chortens and monasteries. Beyond Philim, take the less-trodden path toward Lokpa, the entry point to Tsum Valley. The trail becomes quieter and more mystical as prayer flags start to dominate the landscape.

Trek through pine forests, waterfalls, and rocky trails that seem untouched by time. After crossing the Siyar River, begin a steep climb toward Chumling, one of the first villages in the Tsum Valley. On arrival, visit a local monastery and explore ancient stone houses with wood-carved windows. The landscape opens up with views of Ganesh Himal. Spend the night in a family-run teahouse, experiencing authentic Tsumba hospitality.

As you ascend further into the Tsum Valley, pass through lush alpine terrain and isolated villages such as Chhokangparo, where you’ll be surrounded by fields of barley and buckwheat. The people here are descendants of Tibetan settlers, and their lifestyle remains deeply rooted in Buddhism. Continue onward to Rachen Gompa, a large nunnery set beneath soaring cliffs. Spend time learning about their rituals and explore the monastery grounds.

Follow a gradually rising trail through the wide and windswept valley toward Nile, the last village before the Tibetan border. From here, climb to Mu Gompa, the largest and most remote monastery in Tsum Valley, perched beneath dramatic snow-capped peaks. Monks reside in spartan quarters, and the monastery serves as a spiritual and cultural center. Explore the gompa, interact with resident monks, and visit the small yak-herder settlement nearby.

Begin your return from this spiritual high point. Descend through familiar terrain, past Nile and Rachen Gompa, retracing your steps down the valley. The descent allows for deeper appreciation of the panoramic views, cultural monuments, and serene atmosphere. Spend the night again in Chumling, reflecting on the sacred beauty of the Tsum Valley.

Leave the Tsum Valley and rejoin the Manaslu Circuit trail. Descend steadily through rhododendron forests and cascading streams. The trail narrows and climbs before descending into the village of Deng, where Tibetan-style stone homes and a small mani wall welcome trekkers. Deng lies near the border of Nubri Valley and marks the transition toward higher Manaslu terrain.

Climb steadily along the Budhi Gandaki River, passing through forests, cliffs, and small settlements like Rana and Bihi Phedi. With each turn, the scenery becomes more dramatic. After crossing the river several times, begin a steep climb through rhododendron forests to Namrung, a culturally rich village with traditional stone houses, barley fields, and exquisite views of Siring, Ganesh Himal, and Himal Chuli.

Today’s shorter hike allows for altitude adjustment. As you ascend gradually, pass through Tibetan-influenced villages like Lihi and Sho. The terrain is dotted with prayer wheels, mani stones, and chortens, offering deep cultural immersion. Reach Lho, a picturesque village with panoramic views of Manaslu and a majestic monastery above the village that’s perfect for a sunset walk.

The trail climbs gently with breathtaking views of Manaslu’s snowfields. Pass Shyala village, surrounded by high Himalayan peaks. After lunch, reach Samagaon, the largest village in the region. The stone-built homes, grazing yaks, and spinning prayer wheels create a serene atmosphere. Visit the local monastery or walk around the village, soaking in the majestic alpine aura.

Rest and acclimatize in Samagaon. Take an optional hike to Birendra Lake, a turquoise glacial lake below Manaslu Glacier, or trek to Pungyen Monastery, dramatically perched with grand views of the Manaslu Massif. For those well-acclimated, a challenging but unforgettable hike to Manaslu Base Camp (4,800m) is an option. Return to Samagaon for a restful night.

A relatively short hike today allows you to gain altitude gradually. The trail follows the valley above the river, passing mani walls and barren slopes. You’ll reach Samdo, a beautiful village near the Tibetan border. This highland outpost is often frequented by Tibetan traders and offers spectacular views of the surrounding peaks. Optional acclimatization walk to a nearby viewpoint.

Make your way to Larkya Phedi, also known as Dharamsala. The landscape becomes stark and dramatic—scrub vegetation gives way to rocky terrain and glaciers. Cross a wooden bridge and follow a steady uphill path to the last teahouse before Larkya La Pass. The early night allows rest before the big day ahead. Basic but warm accommodations await.

Today is the most challenging and rewarding of the trek. Begin before dawn and climb gradually to Larkya La Pass, with breathtaking views of Himlung, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru, and Annapurna II. After reaching the summit marked with prayer flags, descend carefully into the Bimthang Valley through steep, glacial moraine trails. Celebrate your successful crossing with warm food and rest in a welcoming teahouse.

Descend into rhododendron and pine forests, passing Yak Kharka and the village of Gho. Cross lush pastures and rivers as you return to more temperate landscapes. Reach Dharapani, a bustling village where the Annapurna and Manaslu trails intersect. This marks the end of your trek.

After breakfast, board a private jeep for the long but scenic drive back to Kathmandu. Journey through green hills, river valleys, and roadside settlements. Once in the city, check back into your hotel for a hot shower and a well-earned celebration dinner hosted by Alture Treks.

Depending on your flight time, enjoy breakfast and some last-minute shopping or sightseeing in Kathmandu. A representative from Alture Treks will transfer you to the airport for your international departure. You leave Nepal with powerful memories of the majestic Manaslu region, its mystical valleys, and the heartfelt hospitality of its people.

The Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek begins with your arrival in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, which is well-connected to major international airports. From Kathmandu, the journey to the trailhead involves a long but scenic drive toward Machha Khola. This route takes you through winding roads, terraced hills, and local villages, providing a glimpse into rural Nepalese life before you begin your adventure on foot.

Once in Machha Khola, the real trek begins. The route gradually climbs through the Budhi Gandaki Valley into the restricted region of Tsum Valley and eventually into the Manaslu Conservation Area. Alture Treks takes care of all logistics, including transportation, permits for the restricted zones, and accommodations along the way, ensuring a smooth transition from city to mountains.
Elevation Chart
During the trek, you’ll be staying in traditional teahouses, which are simple lodges offering basic yet cozy accommodations. These are usually family-run establishments that provide twin-sharing rooms with beds, blankets, and sometimes attached bathrooms. As you ascend to higher altitudes and more remote villages, the facilities become more basic, but they always offer the essentials needed for a comfortable night’s rest.

Food throughout the trek is wholesome, carb-rich, and perfect for trekkers. The menus are surprisingly varied, featuring Nepali staples like dal bhat, Tibetan bread, momos (dumplings), and fried rice or noodles. Fresh vegetables, tea, and coffee are readily available, though options narrow at higher elevations. Alture Treks ensures meals are hygienically prepared and caters to dietary needs where possible.
The Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is classified as a challenging trek due to its remote location, extended duration, and high altitudes. The trek reaches its pinnacle at Larkya La Pass (5,160 meters / 16,929 feet), one of the highest and most dramatic passes in the Himalayas. Trekkers must be prepared for long walking days, steep ascents, and descents over rocky and occasionally snow-covered trails.

While no technical climbing is required, a good level of physical fitness and previous trekking experience is highly recommended. The trail passes through restricted and less-developed areas, which adds to the difficulty but also to the sense of adventure. Alture Treks ensures proper acclimatization days and provides experienced guides to support you every step of the way.

The ideal time for the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These months offer stable weather, clear skies, and the best visibility of the snow-covered Manaslu range. Spring is especially vibrant with blooming rhododendrons, while autumn presents crisp mountain air and golden landscapes.

Winter months (December to February) are cold and often bring snow at higher elevations, making passes like Larkya La more dangerous or impassable. The monsoon season (June to August) brings heavy rains, landslides, and slippery trails, which are best avoided. Alture Treks schedules departures according to optimal seasonal conditions to ensure the best trekking experience.

Cardiovascular endurance is key, so activities like running, hiking, swimming, or cycling will help build stamina. Strength training for legs and core is also important, as you'll be carrying a daypack over rugged terrain for multiple hours a day.

Mental preparedness is just as crucial. This is a long and remote trek where amenities are basic, and weather can change quickly. The Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is a remote and culturally rich 20–24 day trekking adventure in Nepal that combines the majestic Manaslu Circuit with the sacred and isolated Tsum Valley. This trek takes you close to Mount Manaslu (8,163m/26,781ft)—the 8th highest mountain in the world—and into the hidden valley of Tsum, a place deeply rooted in Tibetan Buddhism, ancient monasteries, and traditional lifestyles. It's less crowded than popular treks like Everest and Annapurna, making it perfect for trekkers seeking authentic culture, pristine nature, and spiritual atmosphere.

This trek is classified as moderate to strenuous, primarily due to its length, remote trails, and high-altitude passes. The most physically demanding section is the Larke La Pass (5,160m/16,929ft). Prior trekking experience is helpful, but fit first-time trekkers with strong endurance can complete it with proper preparation. Daily hiking ranges from 5 to 8 hours, with plenty of rest and acclimatization built into Alture Treks’ itinerary.

The ideal trekking seasons are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These months offer the best weather: clear skies, mild daytime temperatures, and excellent visibility of the Himalayas. Winter treks are possible but colder, especially at higher elevations. The monsoon season (June to August) is not recommended due to heavy rain, muddy trails, and leeches.

Yes, Alture Treks arranges all necessary permits, which are mandatory due to the trek’s location in a restricted region. These include:

Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for Manaslu and Tsum Valley

Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP) permit

Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit

TIMS card (in some cases)

Your passport and a few passport-sized photos are required to process these permits before departure.

You will stay in locally-run tea houses, which offer basic but comfortable lodging with twin-sharing rooms and shared bathrooms. Meals are hearty and cater to trekkers, including dal bhat, Tibetan bread, noodles, soups, pasta, and sometimes yak cheese or meat in the Tsum Valley. In Kathmandu, you’ll stay in a comfortable 3-star hotel with breakfast included.

Yes, Alture Treks has designed the itinerary with proper acclimatization days—especially in places like Chhokangparo and Sama Gaun—to help your body adjust to altitude gradually. Trekkers are encouraged to stay hydrated, eat well, and walk at a steady pace. Your guide is trained in altitude sickness prevention and first aid, and emergency evacuation is available in extreme cases.

Tsum Valley is known as the "Hidden Valley of Happiness," with deep connections to Tibetan Buddhism. You'll visit ancient monasteries like Mu Gompa and Rachen Gompa, encounter friendly local monks and nuns, and see mani walls, chortens, and prayer flags scattered across the valley. The lifestyle here is simple, spiritual, and untouched by modernity, offering a rare cultural immersion.

While solo travel is possible, the Manaslu and Tsum Valley region requires a minimum of two trekkers due to government restrictions on the special permit. Alture Treks can help match solo travelers into small groups or arrange private treks with accompanying licensed guides and porters.

Essential items include sturdy trekking boots, warm clothing (layers, down jacket), sleeping bag (-10°C recommended), trekking poles, headlamp, and a daypack. Alture Treks provides a comprehensive packing list upon booking, and rental gear is available in Kathmandu for those who prefer not to buy everything.

The trek usually starts from Soti Khola or Machha Khola, reached by a private jeep or local bus from Kathmandu (approximately 7–9 hours). The trek ends in Dharapani or Besi Sahar, from where you’ll drive back to Kathmandu. Alture Treks arranges all land transportation for your convenience.

Your package typically includes:

Airport pickups and drop-offs

Kathmandu hotel accommodation (with breakfast)

Your adventure begins in Kathmandu, where you'll be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel. From here, you begin your trek along the Budhi Gandaki River, steadily gaining elevation as you pass through charming villages like Jagat and Lokpa, where Tibetan and Gurung cultures start to reveal themselves.

Entering the Tsum Valley, the trail diverges from the mainstream Manaslu route and leads you into a sacred Himalayan sanctuary. This area is rich in Tibetan Buddhist culture, ancient monasteries like Rachen Gompa and Mu Gompa, and majestic views of mountains like Ganesh Himal and Himalchuli. After exploring the spiritual heart of Tsum, the trail rejoins the Manaslu Circuit and continues upward.

The next phase takes you through remote alpine terrain, passing villages like Deng, Namrung, and Lho, which are known for their stone houses and magnificent mountain backdrops. In Samagaon, you’ll take a rest day to acclimatize and explore stunning side trips like Pungen Monastery or the trail to Manaslu Base Camp. Continuing higher, the trail leads to Samdo and eventually to Larkya Phedi, the final base before crossing the dramatic Larkya La Pass.

Crossing the pass is the most challenging and rewarding section, offering panoramic views of Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, and Annapurna II. After the descent into Bimthang, the landscape changes dramatically, transitioning into lush rhododendron forests and warmer climates. The final stretch of the trek ends at Dharapani, from where a comfortable drive brings you back to Kathmandu. With a heart full of memories and photos of an epic journey, your adventure concludes with a farewell from Alture Treks.
