Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, a representative from Alture Treks will be waiting to greet you. You will be transferred to your hotel in the city, where you can rest after your journey. In the evening, there will be a short briefing session about the trek and a welcome dinner hosted by the company, giving you a chance to meet your guide and fellow trekkers.
After an early breakfast, we take a scenic flight to Lukla (2,840 m), the gateway to the Khumbu region. The flight offers breathtaking views of the Himalayas. Upon arrival, we begin our trek with a gradual descent through pine and rhododendron forests, following the Dudh Koshi River to reach the village of Phakding. Today’s walk is relatively short to help with acclimatization.
Today, we trek through lush forests and cross several suspension bridges. The trail gradually ascends, with views of snow-capped peaks and local Sherpa villages along the way. After passing through Monjo and entering Sagarmatha National Park, we climb steeply through pine forests to reach the vibrant town of Namche Bazaar, the main trading center of the Khumbu region.
To help your body adapt to the altitude, we spend an extra day in Namche. You can explore the bustling market, visit the Sherpa Museum, and hike up to the Everest View Hotel for panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. This day helps prepare you for the higher elevations ahead.
Leaving Namche, the trail climbs steeply out of the village and then gradually ascends through rhododendron forests and yak pastures. We pass small settlements like Kyanjuma and Mong La, enjoying views of the majestic peaks around. The path descends to the Dudh Koshi River before ascending again to reach the peaceful village of Dole.
Today's trek is a short but gradual climb. The vegetation becomes sparse as we ascend, and the landscape opens up to stunning alpine views. Passing through the tiny hamlets of Lhabarma and Luza, we continue up to Machhermo. This area is known for the first recorded sighting of the Yeti in the Khumbu region, adding a bit of legend to the adventure.
We continue our ascent alongside the Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in the Himalayas. After reaching the stunning turquoise lakes of Gokyo, we take a rest and then, if energy allows, hike up to Gokyo Ri for an incredible sunset view over Everest, Cho Oyu, and other giant peaks. This is one of the most rewarding viewpoints in the Everest region.
Before beginning our return trek, we take a morning hike to the 4th Gokyo Lake, a serene and lesser-visited spot offering peaceful scenery and a deeper connection to the high Himalayas. After enjoying the beauty of the glacial lakes and surrounding peaks, we retrace our steps back to Machhermo for the night.
Today we descend steadily, retracing our path back through Dole and the beautiful alpine forests. The warmer air and thicker oxygen levels will be a welcome change. Reaching Namche Bazaar again, you'll have the chance to relax, visit cafes, or pick up souvenirs from local handicraft shops.
The final day of trekking takes us back down the steep trail along the Dudh Koshi River. Crossing several suspension bridges and passing familiar villages, we eventually reach Lukla. This marks the end of our trekking journey. In the evening, you can celebrate the successful completion of your trek with your guide and porters.
Early in the morning, we take a return flight from Lukla to Kathmandu, again enjoying spectacular aerial views of the Himalayas. Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is free for rest or optional sightseeing. You may want to enjoy a relaxing massage, shop for souvenirs, or explore the historic streets of Thamel.
Depending on your flight schedule, a representative from Alture Treks will escort you to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward journey. We hope the Gokyo Lake Trek has given you unforgettable memories and a deeper appreciation of the Himalayas.
Daytime temperatures gradually drop as altitude increases:
May–June (pre‑monsoon) and September–October (post‑monsoon) offer clear skies and stable weather—ideal trekking windows. Alture Treks will time departure accordingly. Himalayan weather can be unpredictable: sudden snowfall or storms are possible at high altitude, so waterproof gear and thermal insulation are essential.
The Gokyo Lake Trek is a breathtaking journey through the heart of Nepal’s Everest region, offering a less-crowded yet equally mesmerizing alternative to the classic Everest Base Camp trail. Organized by Alture Treks, this 12-day adventure takes you from the bustling capital of Kathmandu to the tranquil, glacial-fed lakes of Gokyo, nestled at 4,800 meters. Along the way, trekkers will pass through charming Sherpa villages, cross suspension bridges, and marvel at iconic peaks including Everest, Lhotse, and Cho Oyu. The highlight of the trek is the ascent of Gokyo Ri (5,357 m), which offers one of the most spectacular panoramic views in the Himalayas.
This trek is considered moderately challenging. It requires good physical fitness and the ability to walk 5–7 hours per day on mountainous terrain. There are no technical climbing sections, but the altitude is a major factor. Alture Treks has designed the itinerary with proper acclimatization days, especially in Namche Bazaar and Machhermo, to help mitigate the risk of altitude sickness. Our experienced guides closely monitor every guest’s condition throughout the trek to ensure safety and comfort.
During your Gokyo Lake Trek, Alture Treks arranges accommodation in comfortable teahouses and lodges. These are locally operated guesthouses that provide basic yet cozy rooms with shared bathrooms. In Kathmandu, you’ll stay in a 3-star hotel with modern amenities. Our team ensures that all accommodations along the trek route meet our quality standards for cleanliness, hospitality, and food.
Alture Treks provides a comprehensive package that includes airport transfers, domestic flights (Kathmandu–Lukla–Kathmandu), all necessary permits (such as the Sagarmatha National Park Permit and TIMS card), accommodations, three meals per day during the trek, and an experienced, English-speaking trekking guide along with a porter for every two trekkers. We also offer a pre-trek briefing and emergency support throughout the journey, including arrangements for helicopter evacuation if needed (covered by insurance).
Yes, travel insurance is mandatory for all Alture Treks participants doing the Gokyo Lake Trek. Your policy must cover high-altitude trekking (above 5,000 meters), emergency medical treatment, and helicopter evacuation. We recommend purchasing insurance from a reputable international provider. If you need help selecting the right policy, our support team is happy to guide you.
We recommend you begin cardio and strength training exercises at least 6–8 weeks prior to the trek. Activities like hiking, running, cycling, and stair climbing are excellent for building endurance. You should also get used to walking long distances with a small backpack. While prior trekking experience is helpful, it’s not essential—many of our clients are first-time trekkers. Our guides will support you every step of the way.
Yes, altitude sickness is a risk on any high-altitude trek, but we’ve structured the Gokyo Lake Trek itinerary to include ample acclimatization time. Our Day 4 rest day in Namche Bazaar and overnight stay in Machhermo help your body adapt before reaching Gokyo. Your guide will monitor your symptoms daily. If symptoms become severe, our guides are trained to manage the situation and arrange for a safe descent or evacuation if necessary.
You’ll need appropriate gear including a warm sleeping bag, down jacket, trekking boots, thermal layers, gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a headlamp. A full packing list will be provided upon booking. Alture Treks also offers rental options for key gear if you prefer not to buy everything. Remember that domestic flights to Lukla have strict weight limits (usually 10 kg for checked luggage and 5 kg for carry-on), so pack wisely.
Safety is our top priority. All our guides are government-licensed and wilderness first-aid certified. We carry first-aid kits, pulse oximeters, and maintain constant communication with our support team in Kathmandu. In addition, our close partnership with local rescue operators ensures swift evacuation if required. Your well-being is in expert hands from the moment you land in Nepal.
Absolutely! Many of our guests choose to combine Gokyo Lakes with the Everest Base Camp trek, or add on experiences like a cultural tour of Kathmandu, Pokhara visit, or Chitwan jungle safari. Alture Treks offers fully customizable itineraries based on your time, interest, and fitness level. Just let us know your preferences, and we’ll handle the rest.
