Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, a friendly representative from Alture Treks will greet you and assist with the transfer to your hotel. After check-in, you can relax and recover from your flight or explore the lively streets of Thamel. In the evening, we’ll have a short briefing about the trek and provide the opportunity to ask any questions before your Himalayan adventure begins.
Today is dedicated to cultural exploration and final trek preparations. We will visit some of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Kathmandu Valley, such as Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), Boudhanath Stupa, and the sacred Pashupatinath Temple. In the afternoon, your trekking guide will help you review your gear, ensure everything is ready, and provide insights about the trail ahead. You’ll have some time to relax or pick up any last-minute items needed for the trek.
After breakfast, we begin our scenic drive to Pokhara, a beautiful lake city nestled beneath the Annapurna range. The drive takes about 6–8 hours, offering stunning views of terraced fields, rushing rivers, and glimpses of rural Nepalese life. Once in Pokhara, you’ll check in to your lakeside hotel and have free time to enjoy the serene beauty of Phewa Lake or explore the vibrant streets of Lakeside.
A short and thrilling 25-minute flight takes us over the dramatic Kali Gandaki Gorge to Jomsom, the gateway to Upper Mustang. From here, we begin our trek along the windy river valley towards the charming village of Kagbeni. This 3-hour trek passes through striking desert landscapes and Tibetan-influenced settlements. Kagbeni, with its ancient monastery and medieval alleyways, is a highlight of the region.
Today’s trek leads us up a steady climb to the sacred site of Muktinath, a revered pilgrimage destination for both Hindus and Buddhists. As we ascend, the landscape transforms into a windswept desert plateau, offering incredible views of Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri. The temple complex at Muktinath, with its eternal flame and 108 water spouts, holds deep spiritual significance. We stay overnight at a lodge near the temple.
We spend a relaxing day exploring the spiritual surroundings of Muktinath. In the morning, we visit the famous Muktinath Temple and nearby Buddhist monasteries. You’ll have time to absorb the peaceful atmosphere, engage in cultural exchange with local pilgrims, or enjoy a peaceful walk around the village. This day also helps with acclimatization and gives your body a well-deserved rest after the ascent.
After breakfast, we retrace our steps back to Jomsom. The descent provides a different perspective on the dry Mustang landscapes, and the strong afternoon winds are a signature feature of this valley. On arrival in Jomsom, we check into our lodge, enjoy a hearty meal, and reflect on the cultural and natural wonders experienced over the past few days.
We take a morning flight back to Pokhara, where the green hills and warm weather welcome us back from the high desert. The rest of the day is free for leisure activities: boating on Phewa Lake, visiting the Peace Pagoda, or exploring local markets. It’s a perfect day to relax and enjoy the contrast between the Mustang region and Pokhara’s lush landscape.
After breakfast, we drive back to Kathmandu, once again enjoying the varied topography of Nepal. Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel and have the evening free for last-minute shopping, sightseeing, or enjoying a farewell dinner with the group and our guides.
Your Lower Mustang adventure with Alture Treks concludes today. We’ll arrange your transfer to the airport for your onward journey. If you have extra time, we can assist in organizing further travel within Nepal. We hope you leave with unforgettable memories and a deep appreciation for the beauty and spirituality of the Mustang region.
The Lower Mustang region lies in a trans-Himalayan zone, making it significantly drier than most other trekking regions in Nepal. This makes it an excellent year-round destination. The best times to visit are during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) when the skies are clear and temperatures are moderate.
Even in the monsoon season (June to August), the trek is viable as the region receives little rainfall. Winter treks (December to February) are possible but can be cold, especially at higher altitudes. Expect daytime temperatures ranging from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F), with colder mornings and evenings.
The Lower Mustang Trek is a culturally rich and relatively moderate Himalayan trek ideal for travelers seeking a blend of spiritual exploration and breathtaking mountain views without the extreme physical demands of high-altitude treks. Operated by Alture Treks, this 10-day journey offers an unforgettable adventure through Nepal’s sacred landscapes, ancient monasteries, and traditional Tibetan-influenced villages. With altitudes reaching a maximum of 3,900 meters (12,792 feet) at Muktinath, this trek is suitable for beginners with moderate fitness levels, families, and older trekkers.
The journey begins with your arrival in Kathmandu (1,400m), where you'll be welcomed and transferred to your hotel. The next day is dedicated to exploring the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the Kathmandu Valley while also preparing for the trek. On Day 3, a scenic drive takes you to Pokhara (820m), followed by a short flight to Jomsom (2,700m) on Day 4, where your trekking adventure officially begins. From Jomsom, you’ll trek to Kagbeni (2,800m), a picturesque medieval village. The highlight of the trek is the hike to Muktinath (3,900m), a revered pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists. After sightseeing in Muktinath, the trail leads back to Jomsom before you fly to Pokhara and return to Kathmandu for your departure.
The Lower Mustang Trek is considered a moderate trek, making it accessible to most individuals with average fitness levels. The trails are not overly steep or technically challenging, and the altitude gain is gradual, which helps minimize the risk of altitude sickness. However, basic cardiovascular fitness is recommended. Regular walking or light hiking in the weeks leading up to your departure is a great way to prepare. Alture Treks also ensures proper acclimatization and pacing to support your safety and enjoyment.
During your stay in Kathmandu and Pokhara, you'll be accommodated in comfortable hotels arranged by Alture Treks. While on the trek, you’ll stay in local teahouses and lodges that provide basic yet cozy rooms, typically with twin-sharing beds and common bathrooms. Meals are freshly prepared, with a variety of traditional Nepali, Tibetan, and continental dishes. The lodges also offer a chance to interact with local communities and experience authentic Mustang hospitality.
Although the Lower Mustang Trek does reach an altitude of 3,900 meters at Muktinath, the risk of altitude sickness is relatively low due to the gradual ascent. Alture Treks schedules the itinerary to allow for proper acclimatization, and our guides are trained to monitor for symptoms. Staying hydrated, eating well, and trekking at a steady pace all contribute to a safe experience. If needed, guides can assist with minor symptoms and arrange evacuation in extreme cases.
The ideal trekking seasons are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These months offer stable weather, clear skies, and comfortable temperatures. The region is also beautiful during winter (December to February), especially with snow-capped peaks and fewer crowds, though it can be colder. Summer (June to August) brings the monsoon, but Lower Mustang lies in the rain-shadow region, making it one of the few treks in Nepal that remains accessible even in rainy months.
Alture Treks provides a detailed packing list upon booking, but essentials include sturdy hiking boots, layered clothing for varying temperatures, a down jacket, a hat and gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, and a daypack. You can also rent or buy gear in Kathmandu or Pokhara before the trek. Don’t forget personal items such as toiletries, medications, and a power bank for charging devices in remote areas.
Yes, the package includes all domestic transportation, such as the Kathmandu–Pokhara drive, the Pokhara–Jomsom flight, and return transfers. These are all pre-arranged by Alture Treks to ensure a smooth and comfortable experience. Flight delays are possible in mountainous regions like Jomsom due to weather, so we advise keeping a buffer day if you have tight travel schedules afterward.
