Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, a representative from Alture Treks will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in Kathmandu. After checking in, you’ll have time to rest and explore the vibrant streets of Thamel, the city’s tourist hub. In the evening, we will host a welcome dinner where you’ll meet your guide and fellow trekkers.
Today, Alture Treks will handle the logistics of obtaining the special permits required for the Lower Dolpo trek. Meanwhile, you'll embark on a cultural sightseeing tour of Kathmandu’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, and Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple). In the evening, you’ll have a trek briefing and time to make final preparations.
We take a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, a bustling city near the Indian border. After arriving, you'll check into a hotel and have time to rest or explore the local market and culture of the Terai region. This lower altitude is a big contrast from the mountains we are headed toward.
Early in the morning, we board a short yet thrilling flight to Juphal, the gateway to Dolpo. Upon arrival, we begin our trek with a gentle descent through terraced fields and the Bheri River gorge. After a few hours, we arrive in Dunai, the district headquarters of Dolpa, where we rest for the night.
Following the trail along the Bheri River, we hike through beautiful landscapes and small villages. The trail passes through lush forests and suspension bridges, eventually bringing us to the colorful village of Tarakot, an ancient fortress town with monasteries and rich local culture.
Today’s trek follows the Tarap Chu River, passing terraced fields and picturesque settlements. The trail becomes steeper as we ascend through narrow gorges, reaching the scenic campsite at Laini where we set up for the night surrounded by towering cliffs and alpine terrain.
The trek today involves climbing above the gorge, walking along high cliffs and gradually ascending to Nawarpani. The environment becomes more rugged and remote, showcasing the raw and untouched beauty of Dolpo. We camp near the river in this tranquil setting.
We climb higher today as we approach the culturally significant village of Dho Tarap. Along the way, we encounter yak caravans and mani walls, evidence of the region’s Tibetan Buddhist influence. Dho Tarap is a high-altitude village with ancient monasteries and traditional stone houses.
Today is a crucial acclimatization day to prepare for the high passes ahead. You’ll have time to explore Dho Tarap, visit local monasteries such as Ribo Bhumpa Gompa and interact with the friendly locals. A short hike in the nearby hills helps with altitude adaptation.
Leaving Dho Tarap, we begin ascending towards Numa La Base Camp. The trail offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. As we gain altitude, the landscape becomes more barren and dramatic, typical of the trans-Himalayan region.
Today is one of the most challenging and rewarding days of the trek. We cross the high Numa La Pass at 5190m, offering stunning panoramic views. The descent to Penung Tang is steep and requires careful footing. Upon reaching camp, we rest and recover from the demanding hike.
Another high pass awaits us today as we cross the Baga La Pass, the second major pass of the trek. The trail offers exceptional views of the snowcapped peaks and the turquoise waters of Phoksundo Lake in the distance. We descend to Dajok Tang for the night.
A scenic descent through pine forests and alpine meadows leads us to the village of Ringmo, located near the famous Phoksundo Lake. This charming settlement is inhabited by the Bonpo community, practicing a pre-Buddhist religion, adding cultural depth to the journey.
Today we explore the stunning Phoksundo Lake, known for its deep blue waters and dramatic backdrop of rocky cliffs. We hike around the lake and visit the ancient Tshowa Gompa, perched on a ridge above the water. The serenity of the lake is unforgettable.
We retrace our steps through beautiful forests and river valleys, gradually descending to the village of Shyanta. The lower elevation brings warmer weather and greenery. This is one of the last camping nights of the trek, and we enjoy the peaceful setting.
Our final trekking day takes us through terraced farmlands and traditional villages as we head back to Juphal. It’s a great time to reflect on the journey and celebrate the achievements of completing this remote and rewarding trek through Dolpo.
We catch an early morning flight from Juphal to Nepalgunj, followed by a connecting flight back to Kathmandu. After returning to the capital, you can rest at your hotel or enjoy a final evening of shopping and dining in the city.
A representative from Alture Treks will transfer you to the airport for your final departure. As your adventure in the magical land of Lower Dolpo concludes, we hope you leave with memories to last a lifetime and a deep appreciation for Nepal’s remote and mystical landscapes.
The best seasons for the Lower Dolpo Trek are late spring (May to early July) and autumn (September to early November). Lower Dolpo lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, so it’s one of the few trekking regions in Nepal where monsoon trekking is still possible. During spring, temperatures are moderate, wildflowers bloom, and the skies are generally clear. In autumn, post-monsoon freshness offers excellent mountain views, cool air, and a dry climate—ideal for long trekking days.
Winter (late November to February) brings heavy snowfall to the high passes and makes trekking difficult and risky due to freezing conditions and closed routes. Summer (June to August) is surprisingly suitable for Dolpo due to its dry microclimate, but trails can still be affected by occasional rain and leeches in lower sections. Alture Treks provides a detailed gear list and weather updates to help you pack appropriately and stay prepared in any condition.
The Lower Dolpo Trek is a captivating 18-day journey into one of Nepal’s most remote and culturally rich regions. Nestled in the far-western Himalayas near the Tibetan border, Lower Dolpo offers untouched natural beauty, traditional Bon and Tibetan Buddhist cultures, and unique trans-Himalayan landscapes. The trek features dramatic mountain vistas, yak caravans, ancient monasteries, and the stunning turquoise waters of Phoksundo Lake—one of Nepal’s deepest and most iconic high-altitude lakes. Alture Treks organizes this journey for adventurous trekkers seeking an off-the-beaten-path alternative to the more crowded trekking routes, while still ensuring safety, comfort, and professional guidance throughout.
The trek spans 18 days, including travel to and from the Dolpo region. It begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, followed by another short flight to Juphal, the trek’s starting point. From there, you'll travel through culturally significant villages like Dunai, Tarakot, Dho Tarap, and Ringmo, and cross scenic high passes such as Numa La (5,310m) and Baga La (5,170m). The itinerary includes accommodation, meals during the trek, domestic flights, trekking permits, experienced guides and porters, and camping or teahouse logistics. Alture Treks manages all arrangements so you can focus on enjoying the experience.
This trek is graded as moderate to strenuous, suitable for trekkers with good physical fitness and some experience at high altitudes. While it’s not technically difficult, it involves long walking days (6–8 hours), steep ascents, and two challenging high-altitude passes. There are no roads, so the entire journey is on foot, and camping is required in some sections due to the remoteness of the region. Proper acclimatization days are built into the itinerary, and Alture Treks provides full logistical support to make your trek as safe and enjoyable as possible.
To enter the Lower Dolpo region, you will need two special permits: the Lower Dolpo Restricted Area Permit and the Shey Phoksundo National Park Entry Permit. These are mandatory due to the region’s protected status and can only be obtained through a registered trekking agency like Alture Treks. We handle all permit arrangements on your behalf. Note that a minimum group size of two trekkers is required for permit approval.
Accommodation during the trek is a combination of basic teahouses and tent camping, depending on the location. In villages like Dunai, Dho Tarap, and Ringmo, you’ll stay in traditional teahouses with basic amenities. In more remote areas where teahouses are unavailable, Alture Treks provides comfortable tents, sleeping mats, and a full camping crew. Our cooks prepare hygienic meals with local ingredients, and we ensure clean drinking water is available throughout the trek.
The best months for trekking in Lower Dolpo are May to October, as this region lies in a rain shadow zone behind the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges, receiving far less rainfall even during the monsoon. This makes it one of the few regions in Nepal where trekking during summer is possible. However, the most favorable trekking conditions are typically found in spring (May–June) and autumn (September–October), when skies are clear and temperatures are moderate.
The trek begins from Juphal, a remote airstrip in Dolpa District. To get there, you’ll first take a domestic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, a city in the western Terai region, and then take a short flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal. Weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, so Alture Treks recommends adding a buffer day at the end of your trek to accommodate possible flight delays.
Yes, parts of the trek reach elevations over 5,000 meters, particularly when crossing the Numa La and Baga La passes. Altitude-related illness is a potential risk. However, our itinerary is carefully designed to allow for proper acclimatization, and our guides are trained in recognizing and managing symptoms of acute mountain sickness (AMS). We carry a first-aid kit, pulse oximeter, and can arrange emergency evacuation if needed. Drinking plenty of water, ascending gradually, and listening to your body are key to staying healthy at altitude.
You’ll need layered clothing for both warm and cold conditions, as temperatures vary dramatically between valleys and passes. Essentials include a down jacket, sleeping bag rated to -15°C, trekking boots, thermal layers, waterproof gear, sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses), and a headlamp. Alture Treks provides a detailed packing list before departure, and we can also assist with gear rental in Kathmandu if needed.
Yes! While the standard Lower Dolpo Trek is 18 days, Alture Treks can customize your itinerary to include nearby highlights like Shey Gompa, Upper Dolpo, or even extend your journey into Mustang or Annapurna regions. Whether you want a slower pace, a cultural focus, or a photography expedition, we’re happy to tailor the route to match your goals, time frame, and fitness level.
